Strategy

Twitter’s algorithm
The company published its algorithm on GitHub. Main takeaways:

  • Each like gets a 30x boost

  • Each retweet gets a 20x boost (weird)

  • Each reply gets 1x (even weirder)

  • Images and videos get a 2x boost

  • Posting links doesn't help you too much, because those who click it will eventually leave de platform

  • If you are muted, blocked will hurt your future engagement with others

  • If you pay the monthly subscription you will have better reach

  • You are put in a cluster and if you post things that are not related to your cluster you will get even less visibility

  • Misspelling gets you a downgrade too. LINK

In separate news, the company released its API pricing: randing from $1k to $42k LINK

Building the iPhone
People continue to work for Foxconn because…they need the money. The working culture is a leaving hell, which prolongs your life long after you are gone. LINK

Crossing the chasm
Would you buy a modular laptop? Probably only the geeks. That’s why, you should not expect to cross the tech enthusiast from below (2.5% of the total population). We, humans, prefer things that “just work” and, preferably, that we cool. That’s it! Read the entire story in The Verge about this new modular laptop. LINK

TikTok’s life
The US legislators are closer to banning the app in the USA. I wrote in paste newsletters that this is the only way forward when most of the narrative in terms of news is directed by the Communist Party. Let’s see who will fill this void. LINK

Paris votes to ban e-scooters
Micromobility is the future of each city. You should foster it, not ban it. Lack of law(s) (enforcement) led to situations like this. “They note that they now have 400,000 riders making about 1.7 million trips a month.” LINK

Financial Times predicts a multipolar currency
I doubt it, because in this area everything runs on trust, while the Yuan and other currencies are controlled (including their trade account). LINK

GQ has an extended piece on Tim Cook’s leadership. LINK
I have three observations:

1/ Under Tim Cook Apple moved close to perfection in its operations (e.g. made in China)

2/ No real breakthrough under his leadership so far. Apple Watch used technology taken from the shelves. Let’s see how the XR glasses will be received by the market

3/ He moved the company from Design to Operations; not sure a bad thing, thou’...

4/ No charismatic leaders allowed (ie. Jon Ive, Scott Forstall etc)

Space trips are a flop
Virgin & other companies in this market think they can make (real) money. I doubt it and the feedback from former space tourists is revelatory. LINK

On Dacia’s future
1/ Probably Dacia will end up being Chinese; more specifically, bought from Geely. LINK

2/ Dacia has a pricing strategy that is the best suitable for all markets, including developed markets (e.g. France, Germany) that are looking to buy cars that “just work” and which are not expensive to service it. LINK

3/ Dacia going electric? It’s very capital intensive and without Romania’s state intervention will not happen here (ie. subsidies)

2022 was a historic year for the global economy driven by geopolitical and economic uncertainty. While the Global M&A market experienced a 36% decrease, the Romanian one recorded a 10% increase. Read the full report now.

Artificial intelligence

Goldman Sachs estimates that 300 million jobs will disappear due to Generation Machine Learning (e.g. Chat GPT & co). Here is a list made by impact:

Three main takeaways:

1/ The main category affected by AI is the one represented by white-collar workers. (ie. office jobs)

2/ What is different this time is that this category has the means to be louder (ie. through Social media, classic media and beyond).

3/ Probably future political debates will be around ideas and complaints raised by this category.

Alpha GO showed humans that they think in standard patterns transmitted from generation to generation. Now we can learn so much faster with the help of AI. LINK

Bloomberg GPT
Because why not. Take AI and apply it to all business cases possible. Here are some possibilities:

  • Sentiment analysis

  • Named entity recognition

  • News Classification

  • Complex analysis

Wikipedia by AI
Its founder said recently that maybe it should be written by AI. I have doubts about this because I already have seen that Chat GPT is biased on sensitive topics. You can try it too! LINK

Bing Chat with ads
That was fast and not so creative. But it is here and is going to affect Google.

Bing Chat now has Ads! It's going to be fascinating to see how the unit economics of Ads in language models will unfold and affect search advertising. 1/3

Two takeaways:

1/ The click-through rates/conversions will be lower to search

2/ LLM chats will eat search because most people will be happy with the generated answer.

Data

The reign of Youtube starts now
This happens for two main reasons:

1/ The attention span has decreased considerably

2/ Dopamine matters (especially in clips smaller than 10 minutes)

3/ Youtube’s main competitors are not streaming services, but other platforms: TikTok, Spotify etc

4/ The content from the global network delivered and tailored to you according to its algorithm seems to be the hit! LINK

On the future of education
1/ Most Americans don’t think a Bachelor's degree is worth it anymore. LINK

2/ A study year at Ive league universities costs between 72 and 90k / year (!)

3/ As explained in other newsletters the future of education will be on short programs, microcredits and hybrid.

The birth rate in South Korea
South Korea will give families $770 a month for one year to have a baby. Now, this will not be saved with a bigger check or 2 years' maternity leave. But only with proper arrangements for access to accommodation, infrastructure and child care. LINK
